Lace Top European Hair: Choosing a Light White Shade
Yes, lace top European hair can be taken to a light white or platinum shade, but it has to be lightened first, and the result depends on the hair you start with. European hair is fine and soft, which makes it beautiful in pale shades and also more delicate during color work.
At Orna Wigs, we hand-color wigs at our Manhattan and Baltimore studios. Here is what goes into a white shade, what affects time and cost, and how to keep it bright.

What lace top European hair means
Each part of the name describes something different about the wig:
- European hair is human hair sourced from Europe, usually fine to medium in texture.
- Virgin means the hair had never been chemically colored or permed before it was made into the wig.
- Lace top means hairs are hand-tied into lace across the crown, so you can part the hair naturally and the scalp area looks realistic.
A lace top is different from a lace front, which only covers the hairline. Many custom pieces combine both.
How European hair is lightened to white
White is the hardest shade to reach. The hair is lightened step by step until it reaches a very pale yellow, then toned to cancel the yellow and leave a clean white or icy platinum.
Darker hair needs more lift, which means more processing and more stress on the strands. Starting with the lightest base hair available usually gives a softer, healthier result. On a lace top, the knots at the crown can also be lightened so they don't show as dark dots against white hair.
Once hair has been lightened, it is no longer virgin. The hair quality still matters, though: virgin hair with an intact cuticle handles lightening far better than hair that was processed before.
What affects the time and cost of a white wig
A white shade is custom work, so there's no single price. The main factors are:
- How dark the starting hair is, and how many lightening sessions it needs
- Length and density, since more hair means more color work
- Cap construction, including lace top, lace front or full lace
- Extra details such as lightened knots, a shadow root or balayage
Lightening is done gradually to protect the hair, so color work adds time to a custom order. We give you a timeline at your consultation, based on the piece you choose. You can see our color options on the custom color wigs page.
Choosing a cut that suits pale hair
White hair shows the shape of a cut clearly, so the cut matters as much as the color. A bob with bangs, soft layers or face-framing pieces can make a very light shade feel familiar rather than dramatic.
If you have always worn bangs or a certain part, tell us at the start. We cut and shape every wig to your face during fitting.
How to keep a white wig bright
Pale hair picks up yellow tones from heat, product buildup, sunlight and smoke. A few habits keep it clean:
- Wash with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and use a purple or silver shampoo occasionally to neutralize yellow.
- Keep heat tools on low and always use a heat protectant.
- Store the wig on a stand away from direct sunlight.
- Bring it in for professional styling and toning when the shade starts to warm up.
What to bring to your consultation
Bring photos of the white or platinum shade you like, and of cuts you have worn before. Tell us where you usually part your hair and how full you like it around your face.
Clients visit our Manhattan studio on East 56th Street from across New York, and our Baltimore studio in Pikesville serves the Baltimore area. You can also start with a virtual consultation if you live farther away.
Frequently asked questions
Can I choose density and parting for a custom sheitel?
Yes. Density and parting are chosen for each custom sheitel, along with silk or lace top options. Tell us your usual style and preferred fullness during consultation. Learn more about our Orthodox Jewish wigs.
Can a white human hair wig be styled with waves or pin curls?
Yes. Lightened hair can be set with waves, roller sets and pin curls, but it needs lower heat and more care than darker hair. We style each piece with its color history in mind.
Do you repair torn lace or lost hair?
Yes. Our wig repair service covers cleaning, detangling, lost-hair replacement and repairs to torn caps, elastic and lace. We assess each piece first, including wigs bought elsewhere.
Can a topper be made in a pale shade?
Yes. Human hair toppers add crown coverage and fullness and can be custom colored, including light shades blended to your own hair. Read more about human hair toppers.
